• CHAN 2018 qualifiers: Morocco grab crucial away goal in Egypt

(Africanfootball.com) Egypt were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier on Sunday.

The Northern Zone first-leg match took place at the Alexandria Stadium in the Egyptian city of Alexandria.

The Pharaohs, who were taking part in the CHAN qualifiers for the first time, took an early lead.

Ahmed El-Sheikh converted from the spot-kick just four minutes into the game after Egypt were awarded a penalty.

It was nearly 2-0 to Egypt a minute before the half-hour mark as they pressed the Atlas Lions.

However, Hossam Hassan's well-taken shot went just wide of the post as the hosts looked to double their lead.

Morocco stood firm in the remaining minutes of the first-half and the score 1-0 to Egypt at the interval.

The Atlas Lions had a bright start to the second-half and they managed to level matters seven minutes after the restart.

Raja Badr was the man, who rose highest to head home a well-taken set piece - making it 1-1 in the process.

Morocco were then awarded a penalty on the hour-mark with the Atlas Lions being handed a chance to take the lead for the first time.

However, Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Awad produced a beautiful save to deny Badr from the spot-kick.

Although, both sides launched late attacks, they could not score and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Hamada Sedki will be in charge of the Pharoahs as the head coach during their clashes with Morocco.

  • World Cup: Morocco announces bid for 2026 World Cup

(NBC) It appears the combined USA/Mexico/Canada World Cup 2026 bid will have some competition.

On deadline day, the Moroccan Football Federation announced its interest in also hosting the 2026 World Cup. FIFA announced in May that August 11 was the deadline for federations to “express their interest” in hosting the international tournament.

In a short statement, the Moroccan FF said, “The Royal Moroccan Football Federation officially launched on Friday (August 11th, 2017) a bid to host the 2026 World Cup. The committee has put the file of its nomination to the committees competent in this file at FIFA in order to embrace global football.”

It was originally expected that only the U.S./Mexico/Canada bid would be in the running for the 2026 World Cup, but now it appears that the U.S. will have a little bit of competition, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

While the U.S. and Brazil are completely different countries and cultures, there was no competition to the Brazil World Cup bid and as a result, the local (and allegedly corrupt) organizing committee members fell behind quickly on stadium projects, forcing there to be last minute changes at the 2013 Confederations Cup when some of the stadiums weren’t ready in time.

The U.S. bid however is still the most likely to win the World Cup rights, with the relative ease it will take the U.S., Mexico and Canada to host a 48-team World Cup.

North America hasn’t hosted a World Cup since 1994, while South Africa hosted the World Cup in 2010 to represent the African continent.

  • Juric: ’Taarabt has learned’

    By Football Italia staff

Genoa Coach Ivan Juric confirms he will give Adel Taarabt another chance - “I’m confident he’s learned from his mistakes”.

The Moroccan joined the Grifone on an 18-month loan in January, but managed just one Serie A start between then and the end of the season.

That was seen as emblematic of his career, as the midfielder has never lived up to his undoubted talent during spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Milan and Benfica.

However, a promising display in a friendly with Savona gave hope that Taarabt has finally started to apply himself.

“It makes me happy to see him play,” Juric told Il Secolo XIX.

“I like those who love football. He’s lost 10 kilos, he asked for another chance and I thought about it for a week before saying yes.

“I’m confident he’s learned from his mistakes.”
